Craft and Design Block Printing – Taken as an elective Simple, handcrafted printing techniques, which are the forerunners of our modern print technologies, provide a rich area for craft and design work. The underlying principles can be understood, and practised, with very simple techniques, using the most basic equipment. It is also very easy to build on these beginnings, and students can advance to more complex image making (multi-coloured work, overprinting etc.), again using inexpensive resources. There is no final examination in this module.
Career Guidance
Vocational Preparation & Guidance The aim of Vocational Preparation & Guidance is to prepare the students for the world of work so that they can become productive and competent members of the working world. This is achieved by developing the technical skills and personal and professional skills expected of a student to be a productive member of the workplace. Vocational Preparation and Guidance includes the following modules: Module 1 Guidance Module 2 Jobsearch Module 3 Work Experience 1 Module 4 Work Experience 2, 3 and 4 Module 5 Enterprise 1, 2 and 3 Module 6 Community Work Module 7 Work and Living The following modules are mandatory: Guidance Jobsearch Work Experience 1 and 2 Enterprise 1 or 2 In Margaret Aylward CC students complete three work experience placements over the two years of the programme. Each placement is for two weeks and is arranged by the students themselves where possible.
Childcare/Community Care
Childcare/Community Care This course facilitates the personal development of the student and the formation of good human relationships, by providing opportunities for students to gain greater knowledge, understanding and experience of different individuals in the community. It provides a preparation for parenthood and life and an introduction to further study or work in the childcare and community care area. Students study any four of the following modules: Module 1 The Care of Babies and Young Children Module 2 Child Development and Play Module 3 Parenting and Care Provision Module 4 People with Special Needs Module 5 Older People Students sit a written examination in this subject in June of 6th year. They must also complete an Assignment Brief as part of this subject.
English and Communications
LCA English & Communication English and Communication is designed on the premise that improving communication involves raising students’ awareness about their own use of language and the language of others. This is achieved through the study of language in use in real communicative contexts – oral, written or visual. Letters, reports, newspaper articles, speeches, advertisements, films, songs, poems, novels can all be described as texts and are used as part of the English and Communications course. The modules covered in English and Communications include: Year 1 Module 1 Communications and the Working World Module 2 Communications and Enterprise Year 2 Module 3 The Communications Media Module 4 Critical Literacy and Composition Students sit a written examination in this subject in June of 6th year. The oral part of the English examination takes place in May of 6th year.
French
LCA French aims to encourage Leaving Certificate Applied students to take up the challenge of learning a language and to develop a basic level of language competence. Students sit a written examination in this subject in June of 6th year. The oral part of the French examination takes place in May of 6th year.
Hotel Catering
Hotel Catering and Tourism Module 4 Catering for Diversity – Taken as an elective In this module students are given the opportunity to explore the influence of culture, politics and religion on diet and eating customs. They will source, prepare and serve ethnic and vegetarian products and will learn about special dietary requirements. The hotel, catering and tourism industry in Ireland is becoming increasingly responsive to the diverse needs of its markets. This module provides a practical context for students to apply their creativity and practical skills to a range of ethnic and vegetarian cuisines and to consider special medical and health related diets. Unit 1 Ethnic Options Unit 2 Special Diets There is no final examination in this module.
Information Technology
Introduction to Information and Communications Technology Information and Communications Technology forms part of the core curriculum for all Leaving Certificate Applied students. It is intended to give students the skills and understanding to use computers in both their current and future lives. The Leaving Certificate Applied programme offers the ideal forum for students to apply these skills in a practical way, particularly in presenting task work and key assignments across the full spectrum of the curriculum. Two modules are completed by students in this mandatory course. Module 1 Introduction to the Computer and Word Processing Module 2 Introduction to Other Software Packages There is no final examination in this module.
ICT
Information and Communications Technology The aim of this course is to give students a more in-depth exposure to the skills and understanding necessary to use computers in their future working lives. This course, which consists of six modules of which four must be chosen offers the flexibility to the students to concentrate on the aspects of Information and Communication Technology which they feel are most appropriate to their interests, needs and ambitions. These modules include: Module 1 Word Processing Module 2 Databases Module 3 Spreadsheets Module 4 Desktop Publishing Module 5 The Internet Module 6 Text Entry Students sit a written and practical examination in this subject in late May of 6th year.
Irish
LCA Gaeilge – Gaeilge Chumarsáideach LCA Irish develops students’ written, spoken, reading and listening skills in the Irish language. There is an emphasis on communicating through Irish. Students also study aspects of Irish life and culture as part of their coursework. Students sit a written examination in this subject in June of sixth year. The oral component of the examination, worth 40%, takes place in May of sixth year.
Leisure Recreation
Leisure and Recreation The course is designed to enable students to acquire and develop skills which will encourage them to participate in active leisure pursuits. The modules will broaden students’ perspectives of leisure and recreation activities and offer them opportunities to participate in a range of physical activities. The modules also encourage co-operation between students and allows for the development of personal and social skills. The Leisure and Recreation course promotes long-term learning and motivates the students to choose a life-style that is active, healthy and meaningful. Modules that students may study as part of the Leisure and Recreation course include: Module 1 Physical Activity for Performance. Module 2 Physical Activity for Health and Fitness. Module 3 Physical Activity for Recreation. There is no final examination in Leisure and Recreation.
Mathematical Applications
Mathematical Applications This course is intended to prepare students for life, work, further education and a world where skills and knowledge require constant updating. The course seeks to consolidate and improve students’ mathematical knowledge, skills and concepts through practical, analytical, problem solving applications and through integration with other modules. Modules for the Mathematical Applications course include: YEAR 1 Module 1 Mathematics for Living Module 2 Enterprise Mathematics YEAR 2 Module 3 Mathematics for Leisure & Civic Affairs Module 4 Mathematics for Working Life Students sit a written examination in this subject in June of 6th year.

Social Education The course provides opportunities for students to examine and explore issues and topics related to self-awareness, interpersonal relationships, healthcare, and contemporary, social, economic, political and cultural issues. It also aims to prepare students for the transition from dependent to independent living. Students complete the following 6 modules over the two years of the programme. Visual Arts
Visual Arts Module 1 Individuality and Identity Module 2 The Local Environment Individuality and Identity Students are given opportunities to investigate issues that are meaningful to them. They can develop personal values and gain self-esteem by creating images and forms relating to themselves and their culture. The sense of satisfaction that can result from personalised work is the main theme of this module. The Local Environment In this module students undertake a study of their local built and natural environments. This should lead to an enlightened sense of environmental awareness brought about by aesthetic perceptions. Physical contact with the environment is paramount, as is the students realisation that their interpretation of environmental values is personally meaningful and of wider relevance. There is no final examination in this module.
